Advantages of Stainless Steel Fastener

Mar 24,2023

Stainless Steel Doesn’t Stain
Unlike many other metals, stainless steel doesn’t rust or tarnish. This is because it has a naturally occurring protective layer called chromium oxide that prevents oxidation and corrosion.
It also self-heals if scratched or otherwise damaged. This is because the alloy contains at least 10.5% chromium and is an iron-based alloy.
This chromium oxide layer protects the fastener from oxidation and corrosion by forming a thin film that acts as a barrier against oxygen, which can penetrate the bare alloy surface, corroding it.
In addition to the natural chromium oxide layer, stainless steels can be passivated (a form of acid treatment) to increase their resistance to corrosion. The passivation process involves putting the fastener in an acid bath that removes iron from the surface and forcing it to convert chromium into an oxide, thereby thickening this layer.
The fastener’s surface can be polished or electro-polished to enhance the chromium oxide layer, which further increases its corrosion resistance. This method is typically applied to grade 316 stainless which is the more resistant option for marine applications.
Stainless Steel is an excellent choice for any application that requires corrosion resistance, strength, and value. It can be used in a wide range of environments, including industrial, transportation, and food industries. Stainless steel is also a cost-effective alternative to other metals, as it lasts longer and has a low maintenance requirement.
